Context of Fences
Fences begins in 1957 and ends in 1965, which is pre-black power movement and pre-civil rights. However it was a time in history when African Americans had begun to protest and petition for their rights, leading into the black power movements that would take off in 1966. It was a time when African Americans were turning towards more hopeful events.

-The over all changes between Troy’s younger years to the 60’s ads to the story cause it rubs the racial discrimination that he experienced in his face even more , creating the tension between him and his son.
- Though the opportunity for African-American Troy Maxson to succeed as a pro athelete was slim to none, times have changed, which could have potentially meant Cory may have had a promision future ahead of his at a pro athlete.
